NYFW Fall 16

It's been almost two weeks since New York Fashion Week has formally ended, but that doesn't mean we're feeling any less from the aftermath. This year's fashion week wasn't the most groundbreaking or exciting in terms of collections and presentations - most of the shows, while meticulously crafted and executed true to each designer's aesthetic, fell flat into the ringer of modest expectancy. What this upcoming fall season did present was a bevy of ways to pique interest in audiences beyond the inner industry circles and fashion aficionados. From celebrity collections and appearances to systematic changes to an industry long stagnant in its ways, here are the highlights from what could only be described as a season of stars and change.

Yeezy Season 3

If there's anybody that could sell out Madison Square Garden for the fashion presentation in less than 10 minutes, it's Kanye West. And that's exactly what he did with Yeezy Season 3. Over 18,000 spectators filled MSG to watch the unveiling of Kanye West's new line, which also doubled as a listening party for the rapper's new album "The Life of Pablo". With over 1,000 extras in the set, models came out in clothing that matched the streetwear, athleisure vibe the brand is known for. However, a larger variety of color and strong motifs inspired by refugee camps were notably infused throughout the entire collection to bring together a show with a touch more dimension than past seasons. Throw on an appearance by THE supermodel Naomi Campbell and what might be the single most grand New York Fashion Week presentation to take place since its conception, and will likely only be surpassed by the same man himself.

Rihanna

Yeezy wasn't the only celebrity to have a spot in this season's runway calendar. Rihanna tried her hand at a full collection for the first time in collaboration with Fenty x Puma, and to say it slayed would be a gross understatement. The casting was nothing less than top tier, with an all-star model lineup ranging from the Hadid sisters to current VS Angels Stella Maxwell, Taylor Hill, and Kate Grigorieva to runway all stars like Imaan Hammam, Lexi Boling, Maria Borges, and Fei Fei Sun, just to name a few. The show wasn't as elaborate or as massive in scale as her celebrity counterpart's and kept the format of a traditional show, but it was just as impactful, lit with LED panels and moody, graphic trees to line the runway. With dramatic silhouettes that pack equal doses of sex and sport, monochrome tones, and a catering to society's obsession with streetwear, we're sure these pieces (once released) will fly off the shelves faster than Bad Girl RiRi's new album sans listening party.

See-Buy-Wear - Rebecca Minkoff, Michael Kors, Diane Von Furstenburg, and More

In what would be one of the more major business changes to be introduced in latter years, New York saw the concept of see-now, buy-now enter the fashion cycle. The argument is the existence of a disconnect that exists between the garments being shown for the current season and the customer who sees the garment, but needs to wait a full season - or at the minimum, a couple of months - before it's available for purchase. This embraces a more direct-to-consumer approach and drives the focus of the designers more towards their customers and the business side of fashion. Millennial designer and innovator Rebecca Minkoff set off the trend by showing an entire line compromised around Spring '16, some old designs and some brand new. However, word is that more traditional markets such as Milan and Paris are turning their backs on the proposed change in the fashion system. Regardless, the topic is one that's in for heavy debate following this season's showings and the near business seasons to come.
