With winter (hopefully) coming to a close, now is the perfect time to start thinking about doing some spring cleaning and updating your décor to some of 2016’s hottest decorating looks.
Picture This.
Always wanted to know how to take your apartment and give it those artsy vibes you've been looking for? Try posters and prints! Cheap, easy to frame and hang (or even prop up on the floor for a more 'studio loft in NYC vibe'), there's no way you can go wrong! Stumped and need some inspo? Try the Urban Outfitters Print Shop, filled with all kinds of posters and prints for the adventurer, the artist, the stargazer, and even the minimalist.
Try either a sophisticated gallery wall look...
or a casual art collector look.
Getting Started.
- If you have the option to buy with or without a frame, just remember that chances are you can find pretty cheap frames at stores like IKEA and Target and save money!
- You can also totally drop the frame and try picture clips or hangers to vary the look a little!
- Support local artists! Columbus runs a flea market about every 3 months filled with local artists selling originals and prints of their work! I recently purchased some prints from Meagan Alwood Karcic, who attended the winter flea.
- Get creative! Try framing wrapping papers, maps, or magazine covers. Anything on paper has potential!
Seventies Shag
Remember that story about your dad's '70's Volkswagon Beetle that he reupholstered with shag carpet? Okay, maybe that was just my dad. Anyways, picture anything 70's and chances are you'll see some kind of shag/yarn disaster. Recently though, all kinds of fuzzy yarn decor have been popping up in the most unexpected forms.
Forget the dark green, mustard and brown tones of the 70's. This Shaggy Ottoman from Urban uses light neutrals for an updated look.
Woven wall hangings like this one can be found everywhere from Etsy to more local vendors like Ruhling//Woven.
Add a little bit of funky flair to a couch, chair, or bad with a shaggy pillow. These are super easy to find and are at nearly any place that sells throw pillows.
Need Some Help?
- Try and stick to neutrals and make sure to keep some color contrast to keep your place from looking like a monochromatic nightmare. Yikes.
- All it takes a trip to a craft store that sells yarn, an online tutorial, and a lot of patience to make one of the wall hangings.
Industrial Inspirations.
Unique materials like concrete and copper are popping everywhere from planters to lighting and can give your place a unique polished look. Think of some things you would find a construction site and give it a chic twist (kinda like Jeremy Scott did for Moschino back in September). Take a basic lamp cord and put a geometric metal cage around it, or try a bunch of copper tubing make it into a clothing rack.
Etsy has tons of homemade concrete planters and other decor as well.
The Geo Lamp Pendant from Urban. Try it with an easy to install lamp cord from IKEA or Urban and pair it with a vintage inspired bulb.
A copper clothing rack from Etsy. A DIY on this would be super easy too!
Inspired?
- Try places like Etsy, Depop, or any online store that people can sell handmade goods. Local flea markets and store!s are a great place to look too
- Many of these items can be DIY'ed. Concrete and copper wire/tubing is super cheap and with a little creativity you can make something just like what you could buy.
