The Ugg Boot

“Other than Jimmy Choo, UGG Australia is really the only other footwear I have in my wardrobe.”
Tamara Mellon, OBE, Founder and Chief Creative Officer, Jimmy Choo

Ugh, Uggs. Aside from Crocs, the Ugg boot is the most hated-on footwear by fashion-conscious individuals. Especially on a college campus in the Midwest, Uggs boots are everywhere during the frigid winter months, but rarely are they worn other than a comfortable addition to a slouchy outfit. With its humble beginnings on the shores of California, the Ugg brand has certainly evolved from sandy beaches and surf culture. When Australian Brian Smith brought the sheepskin boots to SoCal back in the late 1970s, America was quick to adopt the trendy new footwear to its wardrobe. Ugg popularity expanded even more during the casual-look explosion of the 1990s. In their prime during the early 2000s, Uggs were seen everywhere from runways to Oprah. Although it may be hard to believe today, Jimmy Choo even joined forces with Ugg to create a capsule collection in 2010.

I would have never given Uggs the time of day, but in recent months editors of British Vogue Laura Weir and Julia Hobbs declared the Ugg boot ready for a comeback. The casual and minimalist looks of the 1990s and early 2000s have been reappearing in the fashion game, bolstering the idea of an Ugg boot revival. British Vogue outlines style choices to make when bringing Uggs to the forefront of your wardrobe once again: Wear with no makeup, sexy fishnets (sweatpants are out), a vintage dress, or a chunky knit.

Ripped boyfriend jeans and Uggs are a casual yet street chic pairing.

Wear with an oversized wool coat. Don't be afraid to play with colors and patterns.

This summer is expected to be filled with bohemian vibes. Uggs with bare legs can be combined with skirts, longline shirts, and tunic dresses to satisfy your free-spirited side.

Minimal makeup and neutral tones allow for a boho feel.

While Uggs still may have to wait some time before they lose their stigma, the future of the footwear brand and its presence in today's fashion are on the upswing. It will be interesting to see how Anna Wintour responds to this style decision by British Vogue. Ultimately, the footwear choice is up to you. Will you be brave enough to experiment with Uggs this season?
